What do you need to operate a CMV
If you want to operate a CMV that does not require a CDL (CMV under 26,000lbs GVWR or GCWR) then all you need is to be approved by the company, have a valid driver’s license, a Valid DOT Medical Card (sorry a medical marijuana card won’t work, lol), a driver file, and that’s about it.
When you drive a CMV you also need to follow all Federal rules for Commercial vehicles.
Like: stopping at ports of entry, Hours of Service Rules, have your Medical Card with you, be drug free, make sure your load is properly tied down, and other rules like those.
If the vehicle has a GVWR or GCWR over 26,000 then you would need the right class of CDL to operate than commercial vehicle. As well as all the other stuff we talked about for CMV drivers.
- CDL: Commercial Driver License
- CMV: Commercial Motor Vehicle
- CMV: Any Vehicle used to make $$ that has a GVWR over 10,000LBS
- CDL: Any vehicle that is rated over 26,000 lbs

I got my CDL when I turned 18 years old, and as I like to say, spent the rest of my life trying to get away from trucks. (LOL)
I have held positions from general labor to company executive, and about a dozen positions in between. Some people are all over the place, I have quite literally been in every position imaginable!
At one point, I had become the DOT manager for the largest non-union oil and gas contractor in the United States. They had undergone an audit and were at risk of losing their DOT number altogether!
